Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Apr 14, 2021
A slate floored, covered patio with a view makes the experience of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains all the better.

Living in the Blue Ridge Mountains is an experience like nowhere else. Whether you’ve heard about them in a song, or you’ve seen them majestically showing off in a travel magazine photograph, the Blue Ridge Mountains are unmistakable. Nestled across eight states from Georgia to Pennsylvania, the namesake mountains actually appear blue to the naked eye. Their rolling terrain appears friendly from afar, and they are home to some of the United State’s most famous climbs and peaks for hikers, cyclists, and view-seekers alike. The Blue Ridge Mountains are home to friendly and beautiful communities. Many opportunities and locations exist to build your Morgan-Keefe custom home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Why is the Blue Ridge Blue?

Why is the Blue Ridge blue? This question is quite common. The answer boils down to the location and the atmosphere surrounding these storied mountains. According to scientists at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, trees emit hydrocarbon isoprene to protect themselves from the southern heat. This process causes our eyes to perceive the mountain landscape as blue. The perception of the Blue Ridge Mountains’ color as blue is much the same as how our eyes see the sky as blue. The color is real, nonetheless. The name Blue Ridge Mountains goes back as far as when the land was mostly inhabited by the Cherokee Indians. The tribes called the mountains blue, as well. The namesake Blue Ridge Parkway has been traversed and beloved by many; they’re a favorite of such notable historical figures as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
