Walnut Cove Contemporary Remodel
The goals for this renovation were to re-imagine the home’s use of space to better align with the family’s needs, and to transform its traditional look to become contemporary, clean, and bright.
The re-worked layout capitalized on the often-unused screened porch, transforming it into interior space for a new family room. MKB raised and insulated the floor and weatherized the screened walls into exterior walls with new windows and doors. We removed a portion of the original exterior wall and the former screened porch doors, creating a seamless flow between the main living area and the new room. Although no longer a porch, the space maintains the connection to the outdoors with expansive windows and glass doors on both sides that lead to new outdoor decks.
One of these decks, directly off the main living room, became the new outdoor hangout space. Morgan-Keefe hired Timber Frame Horizons to create a breathtaking porch roof structure, topped with metal roofing and skylights. The structure’s commanding timber framing and size adds a strong focal point to the home’s rear façade. It is a fantastic new gathering space for the owners to enjoy. On the opposite side of the former screened porch, MKB added a raised stone paver patio, where the family moved their outdoor kitchen.
Back inside, MKB combined the once separate rooms of the pantry, laundry, and a small office. The result is one large, exquisite butler’s pantry and laundry area. The amount of added storage is enough to keep any cooking or cleaning items tucked out of view.
The homeowners had a hand in the changes, too, making decisions on finishes and adding their own furniture and art, and even designing their own landscape lighting.
